NAIDOC Week 2020 at Blacktown Girls High School

Due to Covid-19 we had to be creative with how we celebrated NAIDOC Week at Blacktown Girls High School in 2020.

To kick off the week, in the first ten minutes of class, all of our students watched a video in which our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students spoke about what NAIDOC Week meant to them, who their mob is and what they love about their culture.

On Wednesday, all of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students spoke at their Year Assemblies and we had a scavenger hunt during lunch where students had to find pictures of native flora and fauna. The winning teams won some delicious packets of Caramello Koalas! Our students also entered many different art competitions.

Congratulations to Empress Catherine Faye Ochotorena of Year 7 for earning a Highly Commended award for the original artwork she created for the NAIDOC Week 2020 Art Competition!

The theme for this year’s NAIDOC Week was Always Was, Always Will Be, and Empress’s artwork celebrates the deep spiritual and cultural connections to this land held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists.
